Switching networks and keeping your number

The short answer

In the UK you can move your number in a day with a PAC code. If you only want to leave and take a new number, use a STAC code instead.

PAC vs STAC

• PAC - keeps your phone number when you switch provider
• STAC - ends your old contract without moving the number

Text PAC to 65075 or STAC to 75075 from the phone you are leaving. You should get the code by return text.

A clean switch, step by step

1. Pick your new plan and get the SIM or eSIM ready
2. Request your PAC (or STAC) from the old network
3. Give the code to the new provider when they ask
4. Keep both SIMs until the switch completes
5. Confirm calls, texts and data on the new service

Before you leave

• Check for remaining handset payments or early exit fees
• Download any voicemails you need
• Turn off unused add-ons so you are not billed twice
• Note your account number in case support asks for it

Timing tips

Most number moves complete quickly once the new provider has your PAC. Start the process when you have signal and time to check that everything works. If something stalls, both providers can see the same code - contact the new one first.

Pitfalls

• Cancelling the old contract before the PAC transfer finishes
• Ordering a new SIM and forgetting to move the number at all
• Switching mid-travel when you need rock-solid coverage the same day
