Key takeaways
- True total = monthly × months + upfront
- Handset and airtime can be split on some deals
- A higher upfront can unlock a much lower monthly
The only formula that matters
True total = (monthly price × contract months) + upfront cost
Everything else - badges, percentages off, gift cards - sits around that number. Start with the total, then decide if the extras are worth it.
Why monthly alone misleads
A £19 deal for 36 months with £49 upfront is £733. A £25 deal for 24 months with £0 upfront is £600. The higher monthly figure can still be the cheaper phone.
Handset and airtime
Some UK deals split the bill into a handset loan and an airtime plan. You may be able to change or cancel the airtime later while the handset payments continue. When that happens:
- Check both monthly figures
- Check whether the handset balance is interest-free
- Confirm what happens if you leave early
Upfront trade-offs
Paying more today often lowers the monthly figure. That can help if you want predictable bills, or if a small deposit unlocks a much stronger handset discount. It is less helpful if you need to keep cash free this month.
Worked example
- Deal A - £22 × 24 months + £29 upfront = £557
- Deal B - £18 × 36 months + £0 upfront = £648
- Deal C - £30 × 24 months + £0 upfront = £720
Deal A costs the least overall even though B looks cheaper each month.
Checklist
- Write the true total for every shortlisted deal
- Note the term length and early exit rules
- Separate any handset loan from airtime
- Only then compare gifts, accessories or cashback
Next step
Open phone deals and sort with the true total in mind. Fin can also narrow options by budget if you ask from the corner bubble.
